Our Mission
The roots of Manhood from Within™ lie in understanding that traditional approaches to prison rehabilitation in the UK often miss a crucial element: the emotional development of the boy within the man. Through extensive engagement with the criminal justice system, both personally and professionally, we've developed a program that addresses both the practical and emotional needs of men serving long sentences.
We believe that every young person has greatness within them, waiting to be discovered and nurtured. Our work focuses on preventing youth violence by addressing its root causes, particularly the injustices that occur at both personal and systemic levels.
We strive to create spaces where voices can be heard, stories can be shared, and healing can begin.
Tragedy Transmuted
to Hope
From personal tragedy to purposeful transformation, Manhood From Within emerged from a mother's journey through one of life's most challenging moments. In August 2016, our founder Dunia Shafik’s life changed forever when her son was involved in two tragic incidents of knife violence and crime – first as a victim, then as a participant in an attack that claimed a young life. This pivotal moment became the catalyst for a mission to address youth violence at its roots and support families facing similar challenges.

Youth
Engagement
We work directly with young people in secondary schools, colleges, and youth organisations, providing them with the tools and support they need to make positive life choices. Our approach is non-judgmental, creating safe spaces for open dialogue and personal growth.
The Manhood Program
Our accredited program works with long-term male prisoners, supporting their transition toward a more mature and balanced concept of masculinity. We help men reclaim their roles as providers, protectors, and partners, focusing on rehabilitation and personal development.
Family
Support
We understand the ripple effects of youth violence on families – from siblings facing bullying at school to parents grappling with grief and shame. Our programs provide comprehensive support for families affected by youth crime and violence, helping them navigate their challenges and find paths forward.
